This relates a bad landing that happened in Weissenstein on 2021-09-07. pilot & equipment ================= started training in June 2019 obtained license in May 2021 last flight was on 2021-08-13 this was 109th flight, 10th of which since obtaining license wing: Advance Alpha 6 purchased in February 2020 harness: Advance Axess 4 flying in the top third of the weight range preparation =========== forecast says very little wind and decent thermals first time in Weissenstein i arrive early to examine the landing site long and narrow E/W along a N/S slope, big step of several metres between the landing field and the field south of it landing itself is sloped on the E/W axis going up towards E then down again near the end of the field very visible wind sock i actually walked a bit lower than the landing site and walked back up through the adjacent fields on the south takeoff ======= Artem briefs me about the location mentions the large fields south of the landing which make for fine backup many people waiting for clouds to go away decent stable south wind the sky clears up and people start taking off some cows in the way but everybody is in the air before reaching them trees seem a little close but given the wind that shouldn't be a problem as long as i recognise the need to abort early enough i do a reverse take off, no problem fly west towards thermals and landing in flight ========= i aim to pass the ridge before thermaling surprise: there is a second ridge no apparent way to land in between the two ridges: it's full of trees follow someone who is higher and thermaling on the north ridge get a bit of lift but give up before i can do a full turn i have no confidence i can turn there and still be high enough to jump the south ridge fly south of the south ridge then continue west along it feel safer (i can easily fly to the landing) but no thermal notice the rocky opening in the ridge, expect thermal there can't find much of anything and i feel quite low, turn south towards landing hope for a last thermal opportunity over the cable car parking lot, find a little bit of it but give up after one circle, too low go for landing landing ======= wind alternating between south and east based on windsock pick right volte start turning directly over the landing field correct second/last circle to be more south exiting the circle into downwind i realise i am quite low and a bit far from the landing field immediately turn into base, i am very low release brakes to sink less don't want to land cross wind as it's against the slope and there are trees on the side of the landing field quite fast, possibly have south wind initiate turn into final i hit the ground on my bum and right leg as i am still turning into final i walk away without injury or damage to equipment notes ===== GPX is at http://cretonnerre.krunch.be/~krunch/gpx/paragliding/2021-09-07-1315-weissenstein.gpx loaded in https://flyxc.app/?id=5719974095093760 GPS seems to have glitched a bit on impact 43 seconds gap between 2021-09-07T11:23:04Z and 2021-09-07T11:23:47Z and teleported ~40m west probably missing the last point or two before impact device hasn't proved super precise/reliable in the past either analysis ======== i shouldn't have gone for that second circle when i noticed how low i was after second circle i should have turned left and landed in the other field a bit lower in the south i should have gone full brakes before impact instead of releasing and gaining speed i probably shouldn't have attempted to turn into final so close to the ground but landing upslope with trees straight ahead wasn't appealing either i went back for second flight immediately, went much better
